The Washcloth Myth

WashclothsContrary to common logic, using a washcloth on the face may actually be aggravating and encouraging breakouts. Although it would seem that “scrubbing off” the dead skin cells, like exfoliating, would be good for the skin, for those with sensitive skin, using a washcloth on the face may be worsening rather than improving acne. I’ve been washcloth free (for the face) for about a month, with surprisingly good results. I highly recommend giving hand-washing a try (I recommend Cetaphil Gentle Cleansing Bar-“non-soap, neutral pH formulations leave no irritating residue and are non-comedogenic”).

“Myth: Washing your face more often will help clear up acne

Reality: Acne is not caused by dirt. Frequent washing can actually irritate your skin. Excess irritation can worsen acne. A washcloth can aggravate this situation further. Use bare hands to wash and wash twice a day unless you play some sort of sport that requires the use of a face mask during the day. In that case, a third washing and application of medication may be appropriate. Sweat from exercise itself, however, does not aggravate acne and should not be met with excess washing.”

Washcloths, unless freshly cleaned, are breeding spots for bacteria as they are damp and moist. However, even if laundered, the detergent used could be aggravating your skin. Overall, gently washing with the hands is the natural choice.
